Zinc aluminum magnesium

What is ZAM:

Zinc Aluminum Magnesium Coated Steel Plate is an advanced metallic-coated steel product produced by alloying specified amounts of aluminum (Al) and magnesium (Mg) into conventional hot-dip galvanized (GI) or hot-dip aluminum-zinc (AZ) coatings. This engineered coating significantly enhances material durability and functional performance in corrosive environments. The incorporation of Al and Mg improves corrosion resistance by an order of magnitude, as validated through standardized salt spray testing and extended outdoor exposure trials. A distinct technological advantage is the coating's ability to protect cut edges, where Zn-Mg corrosion products form a protective layer, substantially delaying the onset of red rust. These performance characteristics reduce or eliminate the need for secondary edge treatments during fabrication, lowering overall manufacturing and lifecycle costs. Furthermore, the extended service life and reduced maintenance requirements contribute to resource efficiency and support sustainable application practices. This product is engineered to deliver long-term structural integrity and surface preservation, making it a high-performance and cost-effective solution for demanding industrial and construction applications.
Usage: Building roofs, walls, agriculture and animal husbandry, household appliances, automobiles, color coated substrates, etc

About Zinc-Aluminum-Magnesium Plating Brands

Zinc-aluminum-magnesium plating is a highly corrosion-resistant coating for steel. Different companies have developed their own versions:

  • Japan:
    • Nippon Steel developed ZAM (6% Al, 3% Mg, rest Zn). Its coating forms a protective film over time, offering corrosion resistance over 10x greater than standard galvanized steel.
    • Nippon Steel also produces SUPER DYMA (11% Al, 3% Mg, 0.2% Si, rest Zn). Adding silicon improves resistance to white rust and enhances the coating's formability.
  • China (Baosteel):
    • BZM is a low-aluminum type (1-3.5% Al), an upgrade to traditional galvanized steel, offering better corrosion resistance.
    • BAM is a high-aluminum type (55% Al), an upgrade to aluminum-zinc coated steel, also focused on superior corrosion resistance.
Key Advantages of Zinc-Aluminum-Magnesium Steel:
  • Extreme Corrosion Resistance: 10-20 times more rust-resistant than standard galvanized steel.
  • Cost-Effective: Generally more affordable than stainless steel.
  • Self-Protecting Cut Edges: The coating can "heal" minor damage at cut edges, preventing red rust.
  • Durable & Scratch-Resistant: Excellent for various machining and forming processes.
  • Eco-Friendly: Complies with international environmental standards.
  • Customizable: Thickness, strength, and coating weight can be adjusted.
  • Long Service Life.
